"Wide-Band CDMA for the UMTS/IMT-2000 Satellite Component", published in the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, March, 2002, was selected best paper of the year by the IEEE VTS Vehicular Technology Society. Its authors, from the European Space Agency, Space Engineering [Italy], Ascom [Switzerland], Square Peg Communications and the Canadian Communications Research Centre, were jointly awarded the VTS Jack Neubauer Best System Paper Award.
The paper resulted from technical investigations performed by ESA, SE, Ascom, Square Peg and CRC in support of the standardization process leading to the most suitable satellite transmission system for the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). This work was sponsored in two phases by the European Space Agency (ESA), with the first phase culminating in a transmission layer specification, and the second in a corresponding evaluation test bed. In the first phase, Square Peg was responsible for source coding, radio localization, critical review of analysis and audio/video mobile channel transmission performance simulation. In the second phase, Square Peg developed an FPGA-based 3GPP Turbo decoder used to evaluate the effective of advanced Turbo coding techniques in the satellite environment.
