The Classic Aero AES Subsystem recently delivered to EMS SATCOM by Square Peg Communications Inc. (SPCI) has achieved Inmarsat type approval as part of EMS SATCOM's HSD-440 broadband terminal. The HSD-440 supports one 432 kbps channel of Inmarsat's SwiftBroadband service alongside Inmarsat Classic Aero safety services.
Square Peg's Classic Aero AES Subsystem software executes on EMS SATCOM's channel card hardware. It provides the P/R/T-channel link layer used for Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) traffic plus one voice channel for passenger or cockpit use. The software was developed in compliance with RTCA/DO-178B level D, allowing it to be used to provide ICAO-compliant safety services.
The successful type approval of the Classic Aero AES Subsystem reinforces Square Peg's leadership position in the Inmarsat Classic Aero system. Square Peg also supplies the Aeronautical Ground Data Unit (GDU), which is the "gold brick" standard for type approval of Aircraft Earth Stations (AESs) and Ground Earth Stations (GESs), the Access Approval Test Suite (AATS) used to validate the protocols of AES implementations and the AES Simulator and Test GES which were used to facilitate the introduction of the Inmarsat Aero-I service. Square Peg is currently developing a GES Emulator, which will provide a simple and flexible means of testing the operation of AESs and end-to-end applications, without the expense of airtime charges.
